What Is Basic Strategy?

Basic strategy in blackjack is a mathematically derived set of decisions — when to hit, stand, double down, or split — that minimises the house edge to its lowest possible level. It does not guarantee wins, but it ensures you are always making the statistically optimal play based on your hand and the dealer's visible card.

Without basic strategy, the house edge in blackjack can be 2–4%. With it applied correctly, that figure drops to around 0.5% or lower depending on the rule set.

Core Decision Categories

When to Hit or Stand

  • Always stand on hard 17 or above.
  • Always hit on hard 8 or below.
  • On hard 12–16, your decision depends on the dealer's upcard. Stand if the dealer shows 2–6 (likely to bust); hit if the dealer shows 7 or higher.

When to Double Down

Doubling down means doubling your bet and receiving exactly one more card. It is most powerful when:

  • You hold a total of 11 — double against almost all dealer upcards.
  • You hold a total of 10 — double when the dealer shows 2–9.
  • You hold a total of 9 — double when the dealer shows 3–6.

When to Split Pairs

PairAction
AcesAlways split
8sAlways split
10s, Jacks, Queens, KingsNever split
5sNever split (treat as 10)
9sSplit unless dealer shows 7, 10, or Ace
7s, 6s, 3s, 2sSplit if dealer shows 2–7

Soft Hands (Hands Containing an Ace)

A soft hand contains an Ace counted as 11. Because the Ace can revert to 1, you cannot bust with one more card, making soft hands good candidates for doubling.

  • Soft 18 (Ace + 7): Stand against 7–8, double against 3–6, hit against 9–Ace.
  • Soft 17 (Ace + 6): Always double against 3–6, otherwise hit.
  • Soft 13–16: Double against 4–6, otherwise hit.

Insurance and Side Bets

When the dealer shows an Ace, you may be offered insurance — a side bet that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. Basic strategy recommends declining insurance in virtually all cases, as it carries a high house edge over the long run.

Similarly, side bets like Perfect Pairs or 21+3 can look attractive but consistently carry much higher house edges than the main game. Approach them as entertainment rather than strategy.

Practising Basic Strategy

  1. Download or print a basic strategy chart for the specific rule set (number of decks, dealer stands/hits on soft 17).
  2. Practice with free online blackjack demos until decisions feel automatic.
  3. Focus on the most common situations first: hard totals 12–16 vs dealer upcards.

Basic strategy is the essential foundation for any blackjack player. Master it before exploring more advanced concepts.
